Can You Solve This Client COVID-19 Stimulus Dilemma?
Would you know how to solve the following dilemma for a client?
Husband and wife couple, in which the husband dies in January 2020. Couple filed married filing jointly on their 2018 tax return. The couple moved to a different state since filing their 2018 tax return and has yet to notify the IRS via their 2019 tax return. The wife has since closed their joint bank account where any refund was deposited for the 2018 tax return. Wife qualifies for a stimulus check.
The answer is quite simple. The IRS irs.gov website has an "Update Your Information" link. Here you can update your information. Please note that the IRS may require your client to file their 2019 tax return, as was the case with my client. Also note that the IRS will send a letter within 15 days with more specific information, if they were unsuccessful in depositing any funds.
